Apply for funding

One form and one counsellor. Here is what to gather, how to get the form, where to send it, and what happens after you do.

Step one

Get your papers together first.

Most applications that stall are missing one document, not because anything was wrong with them. Gathering these before you start is the difference between a week and a month.

  • 01 The application form One form covers the whole program. How to get a copy is below.
  • 02 Your letter of acceptance From the school, for the program you are starting. A conditional acceptance is usually fine, but call and check rather than waiting.
  • 03 Proof of membership The office confirms you are a registered member. Have your status card or band number ready in case they need it from you.
  • 04 Your most recent transcript High school or post-secondary, whichever you finished last.
  • 05 Banking details for payments, a budget, proof of address. The real list comes from the office.

You are not starting over.

Your counsellor already has your file, your program, and your history. A renewal is a shorter conversation: proof you are carrying on, and how the last term went.

  • 02 Proof you are registered for the coming term A registration confirmation or timetable from the school. It has to name the term you are asking for.
  • 03 Your marks from the term just finished The same transcript you send in at the end of every term. If that is already in, say so and skip it.
  • 04 Anything that changed A new address, new banking details, a switched program, a dropped course, a changed course load. This is the part people forget, and it is the part that holds up payments.
  • 05 Whatever else the office asks for on renewal.

Get the form.

If anything on it is unclear, call before you guess. A wrong answer on the form costs more time than the phone call would have.

The download is the new application. If you are already funded and continuing in the same program, ask the office for the continuing form instead.

Step three

Send it in.

Three ways, all of them fine. Email is fastest and gets you a reply you can point back to later.

Scan it or photograph every page. Attach everything from step one in the same message.

Keep a copy of everything you send. Allow for the post if you are close to a deadline.

Bring it to the band office and someone can check it over with you before it goes in.

Photographs of a form are hard to read at the other end. You can type your details out here and send them as plain text, then post or email the signed form as usual.

After you send it

What happens on our end.

You will not have to chase this. If something is missing, your counsellor calls you.

  1. MembershipWe confirm you are a registered member of Muskeg Lake Cree Nation.
  2. EnrolmentWe check that your program and your enrolment line up with what the funding covers.
  3. Your counsellor reads itOne person handles your file from here through to graduation. Same name, same number, every term.
  4. You hear backBy phone or email, whichever you used to reach us.
  5. Payments startThen two habits: a short declaration each month, and your marks at the end of every term.
  1. Your file comes back outThe same counsellor, the same file. Nothing gets rebuilt from scratch.
  2. Last term gets reviewedYour marks and your course load against what the funding covers.
  3. The coming term gets confirmedYour registration is checked against the program you were funded for.
  4. You hear backBy phone or email. If something looks off, that is a call, not a letter.
  5. Payments carry onSame rhythm as before: the monthly declaration, and marks at the end of the term.

Before you send it

The ones that come up while applying.

Can I apply before I have been accepted?
Call and ask. Starting the conversation early costs nothing, and it means the file is halfway done when your acceptance arrives.
What if I miss the deadline?
Call anyway. Late is a different situation from never, and it is better handled on the phone than by sending a form in and hoping.
Do I need to reapply every year?
Funding is confirmed term by term, so there is something to send in each time. Whether that is a full application or a shorter renewal is worth asking the office directly, and the answer decides which of the two tracks above you follow.
I am part way through a program already. Can I still apply?
Usually yes. Bring your transcript to date and the conversation starts from there.
I changed programs or schools. Which one am I?
Call before you pick. A change big enough to need a new acceptance letter usually means a new application, but your counsellor would rather tell you that on the phone than receive the wrong form.
What if I am turned down?
Call the office and ask what the file was missing. Most refusals come down to a document that never arrived or a program that needs a second look. More on that here.
